‘VORTEX’ FROM SCOTT B AND BETH B

”VORTEX,” which will be shown at the New
York Film Festival today at 6:15 and Sunday at 7, appears to be the
chef d’oeuvre of the film-making couple who call themselves Scott B and
Beth B and their production company B Movies. It should also be good
news for people who are amused by the pop sensibility that interprets a
rudely bland kind of cinema tackiness as a statement not just on movies
but also on the human condition.

”Vortex” is the first
16-millimeter ”superproduction” by the B’s, all of whose earlier
underground films have been in Super-8. I suspect it really isn’t as
funny as the same sort of films turned out by George and Mike Kuchar
(”The Devil’s Cleavage”) in the early and mid-70’s. If I seem to
hedge, it’s because these spoofs are usually far more knowing than
funny. One tends to confuse the intelligence that goes into them with
humor.

”Vortex” is still another private-eye spoof, but one
that has the good fortune to have as its star an actress named Lydia
Lunch. Miss Lunch is a small, dark-haired young woman who, in the film,
seems to be perpetually miffed that she isn’t taller. She plays Angela
Power, a detective called into solve the mysterious death of a crooked
Congressman, and she immediately becomes embroiled up to her ankles,
which aren’t too far off the floor anyway, in a tale of multinational
corporate espionage.

The other characters include a Mr. Big
(Bill Rice), an invalid in a hospital dressing gown; Mr. Big’s
chauffeur (James Russo), who swears a lot and runs the multinational
corporation for Mr. Big, plus assorted business creeps, junkies,
hangers-on and a midget bartender who doubles as a hit man.

Films
like this are virtually impossible to criticize because they glory in
carefully simulated amateurism. ”Vortex” has long patches of utterly
incomprehensible exposition, dopey plot turns and solemn explanations.
Though a small, comparatively short – 90 minutes – movie, it packs an
amazing amount of waste space around each exchange of dialogue. That,
too, is part of the style.


It’s clear, however, that the B’s
are very good technicians. Working on what must have been a minuscule
budget, they do some very effective things with the sets, the lighting
and the camera.

Lydia Lunch, nata Lydia Koch (Rochester, 2 giugno 1959), è una cantante, poetessa e autrice statunitense.

Biografia 

Dopo essere arrivata a New York City all’età di 16 anni, Lunch si stabilì in una casa comunale in cui si ritrovavano artisti e musicisti, tra cui Kitty Bruce (figlia di Lenny Bruce). Dopo essere divenuta amica dei Suicide, entrò a far parte di un’altra band New Wave, i Teenage Jesus & the Jerks, nel 1976. Con lei entrò anche il suo partner artistico, James Chance. In seguito Lunch apparve in un album di Chance: Off White (accreditato a James White and the Blacks; Lunch usò lo pseudonimo "Stella Rico") del 1978.

Apparve poi in due film diretti dai registi (marito e moglie) Scott B e Beth B; nel cortometraggio Black Box (1978) recitò la parte di una torturatrice, mentre nel Vortex (1983) indossò i panni di una investigatrice privata di nome "Angel Powers". In quel periodo apparve anche in alcuni film di Vivienne Dick, inclusi She Had her Gun All Ready (1978) e Beauty Becomes The Beast (1979).

Nella sua carriera solista di musicista Lunch collaborò con altre grandi personalità del rock alternativo, come J. G. Thirlwell, Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Nick Cave, Billy Ver Plank, Steven Severin, Robert Quine, Sadie Mae, Rowland S. Howard, Michael Gira, Einstürzende Neubauten, Sonic Youth, Die Haut e Black Sun Productions. Inoltre recitò, scrisse e diressi diversi film underground, a volte collaborando con il regista e musicista Richard Kern. Più recentemente ha pubblicato dei dischi parlati, collaborando con altri musicisti underground, come Exene Cervenka, Henry Rollins, Don Bajema, Hubert Selby Jr. e Emilio Cubeiro.
